Face-lift for 50 year old lady

She has 3 masts of which the maximum height of the main mast is approx. 56 m. Altogether, the total sail area comprises 2562 square meter.

Her length including bowsprit amounts some 104 m and her displacement is 3765 tonnes.

Her maiden voyage was in 1962 and she has won the Boston Teapot trophy in 1966, 1976, 1981, 1987, 1992 and 1998. Another memorable fact was in 1966 when she established the world record for transatlantic crossing (only sail navigation) between Canada and Ireland, 1741.4 Nautical Miles in 6 days and 4 hours. In total she has sailed more than 800.000 nautical miles.

Last year she received a general overhaul at Rio Santiago Shipyard which includes the addition of facilities for female cadets and crew and the updating of the engines and navigation technology.

The first phase was to renew the complete outside hull system subsequently followed by renovation of all internal areas.

Transocean Coatings produced by Pinturas Platamar and a regular supplier to the Argentine Navy was selected to provide all paints for this major refit.

The underwater system applied consisted of Transpoxy Masterbond followed by Transpoxy Sealer and 2 coats of Transocean Cleanship 2.91 Red. The waterline area received the same treatment but then Transocean Cleanship 2.91 in Black instead of Red.

The same anticorrosive system of Masterbond and Sealer was also applied on the topsides and then finally topcoated with Transacryl Finish 3.53 Clear White.

She was then refloated and towed to the Naval Quay in Buenos Aires where she received a warm welcome from by the crowds.

When all internal renovations, which are now in progress are completed, she will continues to be a school ship with yearly instruction voyages for some 150 graduating naval cadets.
